Most yoga practitioners know that the word yoga means to join or to unite, also known as “union” in English. But in reality, the system of yoga paths is made up of a process of separation or division. This may sound like a contradiction, but it is not. This means that through the practice of yoga one must detach with awareness of one’s own mind and body. A distinction between the dimension of mind and body must be experienced with awareness. Only when this separation or difference is experienced personally can one know the truth behind it and when this separation occurs between the seer and the visible, then one will understand himself and life from a new and higher state. A new feeling will emerge. This separation is the first step towards the culmination and oneness of yoga.
So forget all the concepts of getting something in your yoga practice – all logical explanations and understandings are imperfect. Just feel the disconnection. The purpose of all paths of yoga is to consciously separate the mind and body from their identity. Find that yoga (disconnection) which leads to yoga (conjunction). Separate the Purusha from Prakriti, so that they may unite in that blissful state that all Yogis experience in their meditative state.
The essence of yoga practices is actually disconnection, not combination. Separation is its method, uniting is the result. So be aware; Be mindful of whatever you do. Be a witness to all thoughts and actions. Separate your awareness from all other phenomena. It’s not easy, but keep trying.
