Importance of Satsang

Once a young man came to Pujya Kabir Sahib ji and started saying, Guru Maharaj! I have acquired enough knowledge from my education. I am prudent and understand my good and bad very well, but still my parents keep advising me for satsang. When I am so knowledgeable and prudent, why do I need daily satsang?’

Kabir, not giving a verbal answer to his question, picked up a hammer and hit it on a peg lying on the ground nearby. The young man left reluctantly.

The next day he again came to Kabir and said, ‘I asked you a question yesterday, but you did not answer. Will you answer today?’

Kabir again hit a hammer on the peg. But said nothing. The young man thought that the saints are men, perhaps even today they are in silence. He came again on the third day and repeated his question.

Kabir again fired a hammer at the peg. Now the young man got upset and said, ‘After all, why are you not answering my words? I have been asking you questions for three days.

Then Kabir said, ‘I am answering you everyday. I am hammering this peg every day and strengthening its hold in the ground.

If I do not do this, it will come out from the pull of the animals tied to it, or when someone stumbles or there is a slight movement in the ground.”

That is what satsang does for us. He strikes the peg of our mind relentlessly, so that our holy feelings may remain firm. Kabir gave the young man the right direction.

Satsang on a daily basis eliminates untruth by consolidating the truth in the heart, so satsang should be an essential part of our daily life.
